Biden’s Remarks on Age and Immigration in South Carolina
During a recent address in South Carolina, former President Joe Biden made light of his age, humorously noting that he’s “getting a lot older.” At 83, he quipped, “Forty times two, and even more,” as he paused to cough mid-speech.
This event, commemorating the six-year anniversary of his pivotal win in the 2020 South Carolina Democratic primary, provided Biden a platform to reflect on his presidency. He argued that his age shouldn’t be a concern for voters in the upcoming 2024 election.
After a tumultuous debate against Donald Trump, Biden withdrew from the race, attributing his performance to a cold rather than his age. This has sparked discussions about his mental sharpness among Democratic Party members.
In his speech, Biden proudly highlighted his achievements, even in areas where public opinion reflected dissatisfaction. He claimed that, despite reports of increased immigration during the pandemic, “the day I left office, there were fewer border crossings into the United States than the day I left office.” To him, this was “just a fact.”
It’s worth noting that during his term, approximately 2.4 million immigrants were entering the country annually, many illegally. Just months into his presidency, border crossings had already surpassed those seen in the Trump era. Critics suggest his administration took significant time before addressing border issues seriously.
Biden also asserted that he handed Trump “the strongest economy in the world” upon leaving office, emphasizing that it wasn’t an exaggeration but a reality he believed in.
However, social media reactions to his comments have been quite critical. Many users expressed disbelief and frustration, with some suggesting he either genuinely believes his own words or is, perhaps, misinformed. Various commentators labeled his remarks as delusional or dishonest, indicating a stark divide in perceptions of his legacy.
