Tye Kartye makes an immediate impact in his debut with the Rangers

Ty Carty’s Quick Transition to the Rangers

Ty Carty found out at around 11 a.m. on Friday that he had been claimed off waivers by the Rangers. Just a little over 25 hours later, the 24-year-old winger suited up for his debut at Madison Square Garden.

“It was pretty crazy,” Carty said after the Rangers secured a 3-2 shootout win over the Penguins on Saturday. “I rushed to catch my 2:45 p.m. flight and packed as much as I could. Honestly, I just kind of slept in, woke up, and got ready to play.”

This marks Carty as the second player the Rangers have claimed off waivers this season, following Vincent Iorio who was the first in late January. They seem to be on the lookout for young talent like Carty to bolster their lineup.

Placed on the third line between Noah Laba and Brendan Brisson, Carty managed two shots on goal during his 12 minutes and 39 seconds on the ice. He mentioned that he envisions his role with the team similar to this game, emphasizing his physical play, forechecking abilities, and being strategically positioned. Of course, he aims to make offensive contributions when possible.

This is Carty’s third season in the NHL, and thus far, he has tallied three goals and five assists over 41 games.

Head coach Mike Sullivan praised Carty’s performance, saying he “came as advertised.” Sullivan mentioned discussions with general manager Chris Drury about Carty’s hustle and skills in puck tracking and disrupting opposing plays. Although he didn’t use him on the penalty kill initially, Sullivan hinted that they plan to involve him in that aspect moving forward. “It’s challenging to throw someone straight into that without a proper introduction,” he noted, recognizing the unique situation Carty faced.

As Sullivan pointed out, transitioning from across the country to participate in a mid-day game isn’t a small feat, yet he felt that Carty handled it impressively.

In other news from Saturday’s game, Brendan Brisson, in his second outing in New York, notched his first point as a Ranger by assisting Taylor Radish’s game-tying goal in the third period. Meanwhile, defenseman Scott Morrow returned to play after an absence since January 31, filling in for Iorio.

Speaking of Iorio, he was sidelined due to injury after being claimed off waivers from the Sharks. Goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin made his 36th start of the season during the match against the Penguins, successfully stopping 31 of 32 shots, marking his 18th win of the season.
