I Have a Clear Idea of Who Could Succeed Khamenei, Claims Diplomacy is Now 'Much Simpler'

Trump Discusses Potential Successor for Iran’s Supreme Leader

President Donald Trump stated on Saturday night that he has a clear idea of “who” could take over from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei following his removal in a collaborative U.S.-Israeli military operation. He emphasized that this shift has notably altered the diplomatic dynamics.

When asked if he has a successor in mind, Trump mentioned there are “some good candidates,” adding, “I know exactly who they are, but I can’t tell you.” This somewhat cryptic statement left room for speculation.

The president also claimed to have insight into who is currently in power in Iran after Khamenei’s death.

Discussing diplomatic avenues, Trump argued that ongoing military pressure makes negotiations more feasible now than in the past. “Obviously it’s much easier now than it was a day ago, because they’re so battered,” he suggested, indicating that the attack has shifted the Iranian government’s strategic thinking.

Earlier that day, Trump had publicly confirmed Khamenei’s removal during the initial phases of what was the largest coordinated U.S.-Israel military operation to date.

“There was nothing he or the other leaders with him could do,” Trump remarked, pointing out the effectiveness of their intelligence and cooperation with Israel.

Reports indicated that the first strike resulted in the deaths of about 40 high-ranking Iranian officials, along with Khamenei.

In a video released around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Trump announced the operation’s commencement, describing it as both defensive and transformative. He urged the Iranian people to “take over the government,” presenting it as their “only chance” to reclaim their country.

As Iran responded with missile strikes, Trump noted the retaliation unfolded largely as anticipated.

He referred to Iran’s missile response as “just what we expected,” indicating that the level of retaliation had been smaller than anticipated. “I thought it would double. So far, it’s less than I expected,” he added.

The U.S. Central Command reported that there were no U.S. casualties since the operation began early Saturday. Conversely, there was one fatality and numerous injuries from the retaliatory actions within Israel.

Iran has also conducted attacks targeting U.S. allies in the Gulf, including the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. However, initial evaluations suggest limited physical damage and no significant casualties.

While Trump refrained from officially labeling the campaign as a “war,” he underscored that the goal remains the neutralization of threats to the U.S. and its allies.

Both President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu connected the military action to wider regime change ambitions, arguing that the removal of Iran’s leadership could foster political transformation within the country.
