U.S. and New York Lawmakers Criticize Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s Stance on Iran
Lawmakers across the United States, particularly in New York, are expressing strong disapproval of Socialist Mayor Zoran Mamdani. This comes after he condemned the recent U.S.-Israeli military action in Iran that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) shared comments criticizing Mamdani, stating he won’t be remembered for any bravery, and likely not remembered at all.
Mamdani has faced backlash not only for his political viewpoint but also for the growing garbage problem in the city, exacerbated by this winter’s snowstorms.
His critical post on Saturday regarding the operation had garnered significant attention, with nearly 36 million views and tens of thousands of mostly negative comments by Sunday.
Mamdani stated, “Today’s military attack on Iran by the U.S. and Israel marks a concerning escalation in an unjust war. Bombs are falling on cities and civilians are suffering. This shouldn’t happen, as Americans desire peace and relief from the cost-of-living crisis. My aim is to ensure the safety of all New Yorkers.” He mentioned being in touch with local law enforcement and taking measures to secure sensitive areas.
He also reached out to the Iranian community in New York, expressing that they are valuable members of the city.
Critics swiftly reacted to his comments, with Republican Senator Ted Cruz accusing the mayor of supporting the Ayatollah, noting that they “could chant together.”
Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman questioned Mamdani’s moral clarity, while Iranian-American journalist Masih Alinejad expressed her feelings of insecurity, highlighting the regime’s brutality.
Critiquing Mamdani’s stance, Alinejad remarked, “We won’t let you lecture us about the horrors of war while you stayed silent when the Islamic Republic was brutalizing our people.”
New York City Council member Vicki Palladino chimed in, stating that Iranian New Yorkers are paying close attention to Mamdani’s remarks.
Meanwhile, Councilwoman Inna Vernikov added her criticism, citing support for the military operation from several Middle Eastern countries while calling Mamdani’s stance inadequate.
One of the more pointed criticisms came from Sana Ebrahimi, a PhD candidate who labeled Mamdani as “human trash,” expressing outrage over his previous silence regarding the Iranian regime’s violence. She concluded with strong personal language about continuing her opposition to his policies.
So far, the mayor has not commented further on the Iranian situation following the uproar from his initial post.
