East Harlem Grocery Store Renovation Costs Raise Eyebrows
The site for a new government-run grocery store in East Harlem has been chosen by socialist Mayor Zoran Mamdani, with a budget of $30 million. Interestingly, this site was already approved for a $25 million renovation funded by taxpayers several years ago. This brings the total estimated cost to an eye-popping $55 million.
La Marqueta, situated between East 111th and East 119th Streets under the Metro North overpass at Park Avenue, is where the grocery store will be located. The aim of these municipal stores is to offer ultra-low prices since they don’t incur costs like rent or taxes.
According to the New York Post, the city’s Economic Development Corporation had already agreed nearly a decade ago to a $25 million redevelopment plan for La Marqueta. This means that the overall renovation proposed for the location is quite significant, reaching a staggering $55 million.
Stephen Zagor, an adjunct associate professor of food studies at Columbia Business School, expressed concern about the $30 million price, calling it “exorbitant.” He quipped that one might expect “the doorknobs and the cash register to be solid gold” at such a cost.
Adding to his comments, Zagor mentioned that with the additional $25 million previously allocated for La Marqueta, which he considers well past its prime, it may be time for a re-evaluation of the overall spending.
Anthony Peña, president of the National Supermarket Association, questioned the transparency of city officials, noting that Mamdani didn’t mention prior projects related to the store in his report. Mamdani has earmarked a total of about $70 million for five government-operated stores across different districts. Peña raised concerns about why such a vast amount was being spent on this particular site, especially in East Harlem.
Peña pointed out the discrepancy in funding, stating, “We’re going to spend $10 million on the 20,000-square-foot store and $30 million on the 9,000-square-foot store.” He continued, saying that there seems to be a clear disconnect, leading to more questions than answers.
The Economic Development Corporation clarified that the $25 million deal and the $30 million grocery store funding are two separate investments. They indicated that this $30 million will cover foundational work, equipment for the grocery store, additional back-of-house needs, and parking facilities, including EV charging capabilities. However, further specifics were not provided in the report. It was mentioned that none of the $25 million allocated previously would be utilized for public grocery stores, and that the store, along with its parking lot, is to be located at the north end of La Marqueta, between East 117th and East 119th Streets.
