Celebration Surrounds the Death of Iranian Leader Khamenei
Rita Panahi, a presenter with Sky News Australia and originally from Iran, expressed a mix of criticism and jubilation regarding the death of Supreme Leader Khamenei during a recent broadcast.
She stated, “This may be the quickest editorial I’ve ever offered. After 47 years of Islamist oppression, the dictator is dead, and Iran might finally be on the verge of liberation. I honestly didn’t expect to live to see this day.” The sentiment was echoed by her co-anchor, Rowan Dean, who highlighted the personal significance of the moment for Panahi.
Panahi, who moved from Iran as a child, emphasized how she believed the regime would eventually collapse, though she never imagined it might happen in her lifetime. She reflected on how dangerous it would be for her to return, mentioning, “If I had gone to Iran last week, I would have been imprisoned immediately.” The unease of expressing her opinions publicly also weighed heavily on her, as she couldn’t even think of visiting family or bringing her son into the country.
During her commentary, Panahi praised President Trump for his actions that led to Khamenei’s downfall, remarking on the courage required to do this amidst an election year. “It’s risky territory for him, considering that many on his own side may not want the U.S. to intervene in Iran’s matters. But making this move—it’s the right thing, despite any political costs,” she suggested.
Recent reports confirm that Khamenei, along with several other leaders, was killed during a joint U.S.-Israel military operation dubbed Operation Epic Fury, which was initiated early Saturday morning.
