Tragic Loss of Colorado Quarterback Dominic Ponder

The University of Colorado’s football team is grieving the sudden loss of quarterback Dominic Ponder, who died in a single-vehicle accident early Sunday morning. He was just 23 years old.

Ponder had been part of the program for two seasons, coming on board as a walk-on quarterback. The crash occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday while he was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

While traveling west on Baseline Road, Ponder reportedly lost control of the vehicle on a right-hand curve. The Tesla spun into the eastbound lane, struck a guardrail, crashed through it, hit a power line pole, and then rolled into an embankment, bursting into flames.

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Colorado State Patrol’s Vehicle Crimes Unit is currently investigating the incident, and preliminary findings suggest that speed might have been a contributing factor.

Ponder, originally from Opa-locka, Florida, joined the Colorado team after transferring from Bethune-Cookman. His coaches and teammates remember him fondly, and many took to social media to express their condolences after his passing.

“God comfort Ponder’s family, friends, and loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites!” wrote Colorado State Head Coach Deion Sanders on social media. “He was loved, respected, and a natural leader. Let’s pray for everyone who knew him.” It’s hard to fathom such a loss.

Additionally, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brennan Marion shared heartfelt words online, saying, “Getting a call from your dad today was unreal. I love you, Lord! Please protect his family and our team, especially our QB room!”

Ponder played in two games for Colorado in 2025, making his debut against Arizona on November 1. Director of Athletics Fernando Lobo expressed, “The entire CU Athletics family is devastated by the tragic passing of Dominick Ponder. He exemplified values of passion, leadership, and toughness, and he was respected by both teammates and coaches. Our hearts go out to his family during this incredibly difficult time.”
