Overtime Lighting Incident in UMass vs. UW Hockey Game
During a recent overtime 3-on-3 hockey match between Massachusetts and UW, an unexpected power outage occurred, leaving fans and players wondering if it was merely a coincidence or something more intentional.
This incident took place when the 13th-ranked UW team faced off against the Minutemen and ended up losing a shootout after the lighting in the Mullins Center malfunctioned.
With less than two minutes remaining in overtime, UMass came close to scoring. However, the puck shot out of their end, allowing the Huskies to rush up the ice.
As excitement built, the lights began to flicker just as Kai Jambiriya approached the UMass zone, culminating in a total blackout that forced the referees to halt the game.
When the arena was illuminated again, UConn players displayed obvious frustration, with some raising their arms and one player visibly slamming his stick against the ice.
The cause of the lighting issue seemed to stem from the arena staff mistakenly thinking UMass had scored, prompting a celebratory response. Early in the game, similar flickering had been evident following several UMass goals.
The Minutemen secured a victory in the shootout, which contributed to their standings. Jack Moussa, who scored the winning shot, described the atmosphere in the Mullins Center as “surreal.” He expressed the intensity of the crowd’s roar, admitting it was slightly intimidating before he shot, but the satisfaction of seeing the puck go in was unparalleled.
