Cargo vessel hit in the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing conflict with Iran

Incident in the Strait of Hormuz

A cargo ship flying the Thai flag, named the Mayuri Nary, was struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in a fire on board. This incident took place near Oman, and initial reports indicate that the Iranian regime has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Omani Navy has been active in rescuing the crew amid this dangerous situation. Thailand’s Ministry of Marine Affairs has confirmed their involvement as tensions escalate in the global energy sector, with Iran increasingly targeting commercial vessels in vital shipping areas.

U.S. Central Command has issued a statement raising alarms about the Iranian regime utilizing civilian ports for military purposes. They warned that such practices pose risks to international shipping and can endanger innocent lives. Essentially, when civilian ports are used militarily, they may lose their protection under international law, turning them into legitimate military targets.

Potential Impacts on U.S. Food Costs

Earlier on Wednesday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center reported collisions involving ships in the region, including an indication of the Mayuri Nary’s incident.

In their update, UKMTO stated, “An accident in the Strait of Hormuz has been reported, with a cargo vessel struck by an unidentified projectile, resulting in a fire.” It was later mentioned that the fire had been put out.

Further alerts indicated another incident, about 25 nautical miles northwest of Ra’s Al Khaimah in the UAE, where a container ship also reported damage from an unknown projectile. Thankfully, all crew members were reported safe.

One more report highlighted an incident involving a bulk carrier 50 nautical miles northwest of Dubai, where the captain stated his vessel was struck but confirmed the crew’s safety.

Amid these events, President Trump issued a warning on his Truth Social account about the severe consequences if Iran were to obstruct oil shipments in the Strait. He noted that any such actions would provoke a forceful response from the United States.

Oil Prices and Regional Tensions

Trump warned, “If Iran interferes with oil flow, we would retaliate much more violently than before.” He expressed concern for the region, hoping such drastic measures would be unnecessary.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced plans to halt oil exports to opposing nations until further notice, prompting anxiety about rising gasoline prices in the U.S. As of now, the national average for regular gasoline stands at $3.578 per gallon with the situation remaining tense.
