Trump criticizes Gavin Newsom as unsuitable for the White House because of 'mental issues'

Trump Criticizes Newsom’s Mental Fitness

In what many saw as a thinly disguised jab at Joe Biden, Former President Trump claimed that California Governor Gavin Newsom is “unfit” for the presidency, suggesting he has “mental issues.”

During an event in northern Kentucky on Wednesday, Trump stated that Newsom “admitted to having mental health issues” and called him “not a smart person.”

Newsom, in his memoir titled “Youth in a Hurry,” opens up about his battle with dyslexia, a common learning disability that often complicates reading and writing.

Trump took things further, asserting, “He can’t read a speech, he can’t say anything else. He said he has a lot of mental issues.”

While he acknowledged that there’s nothing wrong with mental health issues in general, Trump emphasized, “I don’t want the president of the United States to have cognitive deficiencies.” He went on to suggest that Newsom’s admission could cost him the Democratic nomination.

In response, Newsom fired back by sharing a clip of Trump’s comments on his platform, mocking him with the remark, “Grandpa is talking about himself again. We wish him all the best. It’s not too late to seek psychological treatment.”

Interestingly, Newsom has spoken about his dyslexia diagnosis, which he received at the age of five. This revelation gained renewed attention last month during a promotional event for his memoir.

Tensions between the two have been ongoing. Newsom recently critiqued Trump for his handling of various issues, including a viral photo that seemingly shows Secretary of State Marco Rubio in oversized shoes, coupled with Trump’s visible health concerns. Newsom’s press office quipped, “Maybe President Trump thinks everyone else has a swollen ankle.”

Newsom has also been vocal about Trump’s policies, notably regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. At a recent news conference, he underscored the need for funding in mental health and drug treatment linked to homelessness, while also addressing national security issues.

He mentioned ongoing discussions with international partners to assess potential oil shortages, stating, “It’s all about preparing for the worst-case scenario.” Newsom expressed frustration, saying he has yet to speak directly with Trump about the situation, and criticized the White House for initiating a war without clear objectives, which he argues has led to rising gas prices.

As uncertainty continues to loom, Newsom remarked, “Uncertainty is the most certain characteristic of the Trump administration,” reflecting the chaotic political climate.
