Michael Kay Unhappy with Yankees’ Opening Day Plans
Michael Kay is not thrilled about the Yankees’ upcoming opening day. The team is set to face off against the Giants in San Francisco on March 25, with the game streamed exclusively on Netflix during prime time. Kay shared his thoughts on this situation recently.
“Honestly, it’s disappointing,” he remarked during an interview. “It really is.”
Netflix has entered into a multi-year deal with Major League Baseball, which includes exclusive coverage of certain games, such as this opening day matchup featuring the Yankees.
As for the Yankees, they’ll play on Wednesday, take a break on Thursday, and then return to action on Friday, which will be broadcast on YES. However, the final game of the series won’t be available on the network.
“It’s frustrating because we’ll only be broadcasting the middle game,” Kay added. “And the last game is going to be covered by Fox. Essentially, we’re traveling to San Francisco just for one game before heading to Seattle.”
Netflix aims to create a significant impact with this special opening day event. Kay mentioned, “It’s not the best situation since there’s usually so much excitement around opening day. Fans eagerly anticipate both pitchers and catchers reporting and then the big day itself. If I were Netflix, I’d want the Yankees and Giants, but I know everyone at YES feels the same way.”
Last season, the Yankees opened with a game against the Brewers that ESPN broadcasted. During that broadcast, Joe Buck took a moment to express his admiration for Kay.
Reflecting on the experience, Kay noted, “It was truly enjoyable, especially since I got to be there with family—something you don’t often get to do. If I can watch opening day next to my son, I view that as a win, and I’ll seize that opportunity. My kids have never been to California, so we’ll fly to San Francisco, and I’ll do the pregame and then watch the game from the stands.”
Heading into the new season, the Yankees are seen as top contenders in the American League, with the majority of their games set to air on YES Network and My9 channels. Typically, viewers can expect over 120 local broadcasts between these two platforms. Additionally, Amazon holds a limited package of Yankees games produced by YES.
