Hezbollah Initiates Action Against Israel in Combined IRGC Attack — ‘Significant Escalation Looms’

Hezbollah Launches Major Offensive Against Israel

Hezbollah announced on Wednesday night that it had taken military action against Israel, marking its largest assault in the ongoing conflict. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards referred to this as a “Joint Operation,” during which over 100 rockets, drones, and missiles targeted more than 50 sites in Israel. They warned that the conflict was escalating significantly just as Jerusalem launched a severe counterattack on Beirut.

With sirens blaring throughout northern and central Israel, the Revolutionary Guards claimed this operation was coordinated with Hezbollah, which was actively firing rockets and drones into Israeli territory while Iran launched ballistic missiles.

This barrage was indeed the biggest attack by Hezbollah in this war so far. Reports mentioned that around 100 to 150 rockets were fired from Lebanon targeting areas in Galilee and Haifa, with long-range artillery eventually extending further south. Air raid sirens forced hundreds of thousands of Israelis to seek shelter.

Israeli emergency services, Magen David Adom, reported minor injuries in northern Israel, including a rocket strike on a home in the village of Biina in the Lower Galilee. Some residents suffered from anxiety after the incident.

In tandem, Iran’s ballistic missiles were aimed at Israel, targeting areas near Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Beersheba. Hezbollah indicated that this offensive initiated a new operation dubbed “Operation Straw.” The name references a passage from the Qur’an’s Surah al-Fir, which describes an invading army being miraculously defeated.

Israel responded swiftly, launching a significant offensive across Lebanon, targeting rocket launchers and Hezbollah infrastructure. Early Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported attacks on 10 Hezbollah command facilities, including intelligence sites in Beirut’s Dahieh district.

The IDF, collaborating with ground forces, hit over 20 more targets across Lebanon and destroyed numerous rocket launchers preparing for attacks. They emphasized their commitment to countering Hezbollah’s aggression on behalf of the Iranian regime.

As airstrikes illuminated the sky above Beirut, explosions resonated through the southern suburbs. Hezbollah had warned civilians in those areas to evacuate before the bombings commenced.

Israeli officials interpreted Hezbollah’s assault as an attempt to open a second front, distracting from Israel’s operations against Iran. A senior Israeli official stated that Hezbollah aimed to shift Israel’s focus away from Iran, but emphasized that Jerusalem wouldn’t relent.

Officials indicated that preparations were underway for a potential escalation, including significant reinforcements to Israel’s northern front. Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir ordered the Golani Brigade to redeploy from Gaza to the Northern Command, suggesting an impending expansion of ground operations against Hezbollah.

Israeli authorities warned that if the Lebanese government failed to control Iranian-backed groups, Israel might intensify its military actions considerably. One official stated that if the situation persisted, areas associated with Hezbollah in Beirut could resemble Gaza.

By early Thursday morning, the situation appeared dire for Israel. Hezbollah had officially raised the stakes with a formidable rocket assault, with Iran acknowledging its role in coordinating the attack, and Israel was poised for a potentially broader conflict.
