Incident at Great Mills High School
A 17-year-old student faces charges as an adult following an incident where he allegedly stabbed a classmate at Great Mills High School in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. The 19-year-old victim has since been discharged from the hospital and is recovering from a stab wound to the chest.
According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the altercation occurred around noon on Tuesday in a school bathroom. Investigators report that the two students had an argument, during which the suspect brandished a knife and stabbed the victim once, just below the pectoral muscle. The injured student was airlifted from the baseball field to a nearby hospital just before 1 p.m., and he was released the following afternoon.
The authorities apprehended the suspect at the scene, recovering a folding pocket knife. He has been charged with first- and second-degree assault, along with possession of a dangerous weapon on school property. Due to his status as a minor, the specifics of the charging documents were not immediately accessible.
Edward Harris, a neighbor, recounted the commotion: “I heard what was going on. We live nearby, so I saw the helicopter land and then circle around. When I came outside, they informed me that someone had been stabbed, but the attacker was in custody and not posing any threats, which was a relief.”
Following the incident, students were kept in their classrooms while school resource officers secured the premises. Officials commended the swift response of the officers, school nursing staff, and medical personnel on-site.
“The prompt actions of the SROs allowed us to respond swiftly and safely,” stated Detective Helen Deitrich from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. “Because he was already in the school, he could provide real-time information. The medical professionals who arrived quickly assessed the victim, and the school’s nursing staff did an outstanding job.”
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident, with further details about what triggered the altercation still pending clarification.
