Court in Russia finds 19 individuals guilty after the 2024 Moscow attack that resulted in 149 fatalities and many injuries

Convictions in 2024 Moscow Concert Hall Attack

A Russian court recently convicted 19 individuals in connection with a tragic attack at a concert hall in Moscow in 2024, which led to the deaths of 149 people and left many others injured.

The group included four gunmen and 11 accomplices of Tajik descent. Among them, fifteen were sentenced to life imprisonment, while the remaining defendants received sentences ranging from 19 to 22 years.

The life sentences will be split between time in prison and a special regime penal colony, according to reports.

This incident, described as “the worst terrorist attack in this country in 20 years,” occurred at the Crocus Town Hall, where attackers opened fire on concertgoers and ignited a fire that engulfed the building.

The trial began in August 2025 and was conducted behind closed doors. In total, those on trial included three individuals who sold a vehicle to the shooters, one person who rented an apartment, and ten others allegedly linked to terrorist activities.

A regional ISIS faction took responsibility for the assault; however, Russian authorities pointed fingers at Ukraine. The Investigative Committee of Russia suggested that the crime was aimed at destabilizing the nation at the behest of Ukraine’s leadership, as the suspects reportedly attempted to flee there.

“This inhumane crime was planned and carried out in the interests of the current leadership of Ukraine in order to destabilize the political situation in our country,” said a statement from the Russian Investigative Committee.

The U.S. firmly rejected these claims. Katherine Brooker, a U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, made it clear that the United States, along with the United Kingdom and others, attributed the attack solely to ISIS-K, distancing themselves from Russian narratives. She noted that prior warnings about potential terrorist threats related to large gatherings had been issued to Russian authorities.

Concerns arose regarding the trial’s integrity, as international human rights organizations condemned the methods used during the proceedings, with reports indicating that some defendants showed signs of severe mistreatment after their arrests.
