Chilean President José Antonio Kast Takes Office
José Antonio Kast, a staunch conservative who emerged victorious in last year’s presidential election, took his oath of office on Wednesday. One of his immediate focuses is enhancing security along Chile’s northern border.
Kast won decisively, securing every Chilean state in the December elections with a campaign centered on tough crime policies and stringent immigration controls. He positioned Chile as a proponent of global freedom, aiming to solidify ties with the United States. His opponent was Janet Hara, a member of the Communist Party, and his victory comes as a replacement for the former president, Gabriel Boric, who had won the previous election against him in 2021.
In his inaugural address, Kast harshly critiqued Boric’s governance, promising to address crime and corruption effectively. At one point, he urged the crowd to cheer for the outgoing president with chants of “Jail Boric!”, drawing a lively response.
“They are leaving us a country in a dire state, one that’s facing weak finances and rampant organized crime,” Kast stated. “Families feel neglected by the government.”
He expressed a strong commitment to accountability, saying, “Regardless of anyone’s name or political affiliation, we will not hesitate to pursue those who misuse public funds.” This statement sparked further chants of “Jail Boric!” to which he responded with respect.
Kast emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough audit of government operations. He called for order on this significant day, highlighting that it should be treated with decorum.
On his first day as president, he swiftly enacted an executive order to initiate comprehensive audits of government agencies, seeking to expose any financial mismanagement and enhance transparency.
The order also places border control at the forefront, particularly along the northern border with Bolivia, known for its challenging terrain and increased illegal immigration over the past decade, especially from Venezuela.
In recent years, as millions fled Venezuela due to socialism, Chile has witnessed a related rise in crime attributed to gangs such as Tren de Aragua. A notable incident involved the death of prominent Venezuelan dissident Ronald Ojeda, with authorities linking his murder to gang activity and speculating on connections to past Venezuelan leadership.
On Wednesday, Kast signed another order to temporarily close the northern border, designating certain high-risk areas for military oversight. This policy aims to enhance the military’s presence and utilize advanced technology such as drones for surveillance on the border.
Additionally, Kast introduced a “border shield” initiative, outlining a strategy to improve technological access, streamline communication among law enforcement, and ensure that deportation and other enforcement actions align with legal standards.
This focus on bolstering anti-trafficking efforts comes on the heels of President Trump’s presence at the Shield of the Americas Summit, where he and Kast reaffirmed their commitment to combat drug trafficking using military force, emphasizing a zero-tolerance stance on illegal activities.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointed out that the collaboration between participating countries extends beyond security and looks to enhance economic cooperation across various sectors.
