Three individuals were rescued, and firefighters faced a near-miss on Wednesday following an apartment fire in Kansas City, Missouri.
As reported, the Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) responded to an emergency call that evening about a blaze in the 800 block of Park Avenue. When they arrived, they encountered a two-story building overflowing with smoke.
Firefighters quickly discovered that three people were trapped in the basement and managed to rescue them just before the situation escalated. One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Things took a serious turn when one firefighter fell from the first floor into an underground area, prompting a mayday alert.
Fortunately, “the firefighter was able to escape from the building without injury,” according to reports, which also confirmed that there were no other individuals needing assistance inside.
After the fire was extinguished, officials began investigating its cause.
Additional video footage showed authorities working inside the building to ensure the area was safe. Battalion Chief Riley Nolan from KCFD noted that Mayday calls are made “when one of our members may be falling through the floor and experiencing something like this, or if there’s a lack of oxygen or air in the tank.”
“It’s basically an emergency call that notifies us of the need to execute our emergency plan,” he explained.
Firefighters everywhere are celebrated for their courage in rescuing individuals from dangerous situations, though not all rescues involve fire.
According to sources, during Hurricane Ian in 2022 in Florida, a firefighter named Hardas Oberholtzer saved a child from rising floodwaters, a deed that remains vivid in his mind.
“She’s going to have a piece of my heart forever. It’s what they experience. We arrive when people are at their lowest, and we have to perform at our best each time. That’s something I’ll never forget, and I hope they remember it too,” he shared.
In a different incident the following year, another Florida firefighter adopted a baby girl found in a baby box at Safe Haven.
