Teen Charged with Murder in Massachusetts

A teenage boy in Massachusetts has been charged with murder following the death of a 68-year-old woman, which authorities are treating as a “random” act of violence.

Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker announced that 18-year-old Anthony DeMayo from Lynn is facing murder charges in the death of Janet Swallow, found inside her home in Danvers.

According to Tucker, there appears to be no connection between DeMayo and Swallow. “What we can confirm at this point is that this was a random incident,” he stated during a press conference.

The investigation began after the Lynn Police Department received a 911 call regarding a man with a knife on Standish Road. When officers arrived, they found DeMayo acting erratically and holding a knife with stains that appeared to be blood.

Subsequently, he was taken to Salem Hospital for evaluation.

As the investigation progressed, authorities executed a search warrant at DeMayo’s residence, where they discovered evidence linking him to the crime scene. This prompted a welfare check at Swallow’s home, where she was found dead with injuries consistent with homicide.

DeMayo was later taken into custody at the hospital and officially charged with murder. He is noted to be a senior at Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody, Massachusetts.

Danvers Police Chief James Lovell extended condolences to Swallow’s family, describing her as a well-known member of the community. He assured residents that there was no ongoing threat.

The investigation is ongoing, and while it appears that DeMayo acted alone, further inquiries are being conducted to clarify the details surrounding the case. “At this stage, we haven’t found any direct links between the defendant and the victim,” Tucker elaborated.

During a court appearance, DeMayo pleaded not guilty to the charges. Reports indicate he was exhibiting signs of depression, leading the judge to order a psychological evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital. A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for April 1.

This tragic event has reportedly affected both Swallow’s family and the broader community. The investigation continues, as authorities seek to understand the circumstances that led to this incident.
