Vanessa Caswill discusses redemption in 'Reminders of Him'

New Film Highlights Redemption and Forgiveness

In the recently released film “Reminder of Him,” an ongoing theme is that prisons serve not just the incarcerated but also victims.

Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel, the story follows Kenna, a young woman whose life takes a tragic turn when a mistake while driving leads to her boyfriend Scotty’s death. Unbeknownst to her, she was pregnant at the time. After giving birth in custody, she finds herself separated from her daughter, Diem, while serving her sentence. Now, she returns to the town in hopes of reconnecting with her five-year-old daughter and seeking forgiveness from Scotty’s parents.

Director Vanessa Caswill emphasizes that a single error shouldn’t define a person’s life forever. She shared in an interview that those with criminal records are often not as bad as they may seem. “Things happen, and they lead to actions, and often those actions are mistakes or misguided or bad decisions,” Caswill noted. She believes that judging others is complex because everyone has flaws and moments where they seek redemption. “It’s vital to offer that chance,” she added.

Kenna hopes for reconciliation, but she’s met with coldness from Scotty’s parents, who have gone so far as to request a restraining order against her due to past incidents.

Caswill reflects on her own life experiences that have taught her the power of forgiveness. “No matter how difficult, we can choose to see things through the lens of love or fear,” she stated. The choice isn’t always easy, but maintaining an open perspective has guided her, especially given her challenges over the years. “There’s a certain uplift in how you view the world,” she said.

Highlighting the film’s essence, she remarked, “I loved how it transforms something dark into something light. While you can’t erase grief or pain, you can change your perspective on it.”

Reminders of Him features talents like Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford as Scotty’s grieving parents, country artist Laney Wilson, and Tilik Withers as the brooding bartender who eventually supports Kenna. Zoe Kosovic performs remarkably as young Diem.

As the movie draws to a close, two of the film’s most touching scenes unfold when Kenna begins to reconcile with those she’s harmed. Caswill recalled the urgency of capturing these moments during filming, noting that if they failed to do so, the film wouldn’t resonate. The emotions during shooting were palpable. “When the performances resonated with everyone on set, it was deeply moving,” she reflected.

“Reminder of Him,” an emotional journey of love and redemption, is now in theaters.
