Southwest Airlines Ending Service at International Airports in Chicago and D.C.

Southwest Airlines Cancels Flights at Major Airports

Southwest Airlines has announced that it will cancel all flights between its two major airports, which includes one of the busiest in the world, in the upcoming months.

The airports affected are Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., and O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. According to reports, cancellations for flights to and from O’Hare will begin on June 4, as communicated through an email sent to passengers with existing bookings.

Additionally, Southwest plans to halt its flights from Dulles to Washington this summer. An airline spokesperson mentioned that this decision is part of broader network adjustments.

Customers who are impacted by these changes can either rebook on flights from nearby airports or request refunds.

A Southwest representative stated that this cancellation is part of a “continuing effort to improve the network,” adding that operating at the busy O’Hare had presented challenges.

However, the airline will continue to provide services in the Chicago and Washington, D.C., areas through Midway Airport in Chicago and Reagan National Airport in Washington. Notably, Southwest has been operating out of O’Hare since 2021 and has been serving Midway for over 40 years.

The airline expressed confidence in its ability to serve the Chicago area via Midway, offering more than 80 destinations, including the 15 previously served by O’Hare.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently convened with American Airlines and United Airlines to discuss the congested air traffic at O’Hare. They reported that this upcoming summer season is set to be exceptionally busy, with 3,080 daily flights scheduled, a notable increase from last summer’s 2,680 flights.

It’s uncertain if the FAA’s initiative to cut flights played a role in Southwest’s decision.

Regarding Dulles, which began operations in 2006, it currently only has three flights running—two to Denver and one to Phoenix. Despite this, Southwest will maintain 271 flights across Washington-area airports and offer nonstop service to 79 destinations.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Airports Authority expressed disappointment over Southwest’s departure from Dulles, hoping that the airline might return in the future.
