Senate Discussion on the Save America Act
Senator Mike Lee from Utah expressed to Breitbart News that the upcoming vote on the Save America Act will clarify who truly supports secure elections and who is apprehensive about it.
“Next week, the battle over the SAVE America Act kicks off in the Senate. I think making Democrats filibuster is probably our best path to success. We’ll have a chance to demonstrate who is advocating for safe elections and who seems to be scared of them. It’s important for Americans to keep pressure on Democrats and stay tuned,” Lee mentioned in a written statement.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, from South Dakota, also spoke with Breitbart News, indicating plans to bring the House-approved SAVE America Act to the Senate floor next week.
The legislation aims to mandate proof of citizenship for voter registration and require a photo ID for voting.
Lee, who introduced the SAVE America Act, has been leading efforts to utilize the standing filibuster. This tactic requires opponents of the bill to actively engage on the Senate floor to hinder its consideration. If supporters of the Act can keep up the pressure and exhaust the Democrats’ efforts to hold the floor, debate on the bill could come to a close, allowing the Senate to pass it with just a simple majority of 51 votes.
On March 11, Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff and now a senior partner at the Conservative Partnership Institute, put together a list of Republican senators backing the push to pass the SAVE America Act through parliamentary means. Some of the senators supporting this initiative include:
- Jim Banks (Indiana)
- Marsha Blackburn (Tennessee)
- Ted Budd (North Carolina)
- Katie Britt (Alabama)
- Bill Cassidy (Louisiana)
- John Cornyn (Texas)
- Ted Cruz (Texas)
- Joni Ernst (Iowa)
- Bill Haggerty (Tennessee)
- Josh Hawley (Missouri)
- Ron Johnson (Wisconsin)
- Mike Lee (Utah)
- Cynthia Lummis (Wyoming)
- Roger Marshall (Kansas)
- Dave McCormick (Pennsylvania)
- Ashley Moody (Florida)
- Bernie Moreno (Ohio)
- Markwayne Mullin (Oklahoma)
- Rand Paul (Kentucky)
- Jim Risch (Idaho)
- Eric Schmidt (Missouri)
- Rick Scott (Florida)
- Tim Scott (South Carolina)
- Tim Sheehy (Montana)
- Dan Sullivan (Alaska)
- Tommy Tuberville (Alabama)
Thune mentioned that while he rejects the call for a standing filibuster, bringing the bill to the floor would force Democrats to take a stance against it.
“I can’t promise how this will turn out, but I can assure you it will make Democrats state their position clearly,” Thune noted on the Senate floor. “They’ll have to justify their extreme views on these matters and explain to the public why common sense seems to have escaped the Democratic Party,” he added.
