USA eliminates Dominican Republic to advance to WBC final

USA Triumphs Over Dominican Republic in WBC Semifinals

MIAMI — At Lawn Depot, the overwhelming majority of fans were rooting for the Dominican teams, but the game turned out to be quite a nail-biter.

This clash featured rosters laden with talent, and it certainly lived up to the hype for the enthusiastic, sold-out crowd. After a prolonged wait, Team USA finally delivered, clinching a thrilling 2-1 victory against the Dominican Republic and earning a spot in the finals. They’ll face the winner of the match between Venezuela and Italy on Tuesday night.

The star-studded lineup that had seemingly struggled through the earlier games in the World Baseball Classic finally shined during this match, which felt reminiscent of an All-Star Game. Both teams showcased incredible power, dazzling plays, and plenty of excitement, making it clear they could match the crowd’s anticipation.

“Tonight is going to be emotional,” said American star Bobby Witt Jr. ahead of the game.

American Bryce Harper added, “It should be a lot of fun.”

U.S. captain Aaron Judge reflected, “This is something I dreamed about when I was a kid.”

Both teams unleashed massive home runs. Junior Caminero from the Dominican side managed to hit a challenging one against American ace Paul Skeens. In fact, Skeens only gave up damage through Caminero’s drive in his 4 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, Gunnar Henderson launched a deep ball into the left-field stands for Team USA, followed by Roman Anthony hitting one easily over the right-center wall. The victory was secured with superb shutout performances from the U.S. bullpen.

There were spectacular plays, too. Judge thwarted an ambitious Fernando Tatis Jr. who attempted to score with two outs, as Juan Soto was next in line at bat. American Bryce Turan made an impressive dive to snag a hit from Soto. Witt Jr. turned Soto’s grounder into a double play, showcasing his skills with a dive into the shortstop position.

Even Julio Rodriguez managed to rob Judge of a home run, showcasing the thrilling intensity of the game.

The audience was as energetic as anticipated, with plenty of cheers for each side. Chants of “USA” echoed through the stadium as the team finally performed as expected. Team USA had been fortunate to qualify for the semifinal, but they demonstrated their worthiness by overcoming prior challenges.

Caminero’s home run not only led the game but also set a new WBC team record with 15 home runs, showcasing their energy and enthusiasm. His joyful dance around the bases was a highlight, reflecting how much joy the Dominican players derived from the entire event.

Soto expressed that he’s relishing this experience even more than past World Series runs. “The emotions on the field are unprecedented. Nothing can compare,” he said, emphasizing the pride and passion felt when wearing the national uniform.

While the WBC may seem like a mere prelude to the MLB season for many U.S. fans, it holds immense significance for players from other countries. For them, representing their homeland takes precedence over everything else.

Team USA often comes across as businesslike—some might even label it boring—but the semifinal performance showcased a renewed vigor. After a lackluster qualifying round, where they barely edged out opponents over 27 innings, this game felt drastically different. Perhaps it was the higher level of competition that brought out their true potential.

Facing off against a Dominican lineup packed with top-tier talent, including some of the highest-paid players in baseball, Team USA seemed to capture the electric spirit of the semifinalists. The match provided a much-needed opportunity to redeem themselves from an otherwise dismal qualifying run.

Actually, on paper, the pre-tournament favorites looked promising. But they truly came alive in this critical match. Maybe, just maybe, the challenge was what they needed to ignite their game.
