Rep. Jill Tokuda’s Response During the State of the Union
Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii) expressed her decision to remain seated during the 2026 State of the Union address, where President Donald Trump questioned lawmakers about prioritizing the safety of American citizens over that of illegal immigrants.
Along with her fellow Democrats, Tokuda stayed in her seat as Republican representatives applauded for over a minute in support of Trump’s remarks. A few weeks after the address, a voter named Arline approached Tokuda, asking why she didn’t stand up.
The voter noted, “The statement was: ‘The first duty of the American government is to protect the American people, not to protect illegal aliens.’ I just realized you’re not running,” prompting Tokuda to reflect on the moment.
She thanked Arline for the question, acknowledging that public officials often face tough queries at local events. “But my decision was straightforward,” Tokuda said. Her stance stemmed from her interpretation of the President’s challenge, suggesting she believed Trump’s goal was not genuine support for his assertion.
“If it had been a legitimate question and not a setup for later political ads suggesting that Democrats don’t care about American safety, I would have certainly objected,” Tokuda commented.
Notably, Tokuda chose not to discuss her State of the Union experience immediately. Instead, she highlighted the impact of Trump’s tariffs on her website, arguing that they impose significant financial burdens on regular citizens.
“When you consider the hundreds of billions in tariffs that everyday Americans are facing… these tariffs function as taxes on them,” she said, reinforcing her point. Tokuda has previously criticized Trump’s immigration policies, calling them misguided.
“Many of us are just one degree away from someone who lives in constant fear of being detained or deported for no valid reason,” she remarked, referencing a statement made last year regarding the fears surrounding immigration enforcement.
On a final note, Tokuda’s office did not provide a comment following her remarks during the address, leaving some questions hanging.
