On Sunday, Venezuelan socialists participated in a global “chain of prayer for peace and freedom,” calling for the “release” of former socialist leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Telesur, a prominent anti-U.S. media outlet largely funded by the Venezuelan government, highlighted the initiative as a means to foster “world harmony” and advocate for the immediate liberation of Maduro and Flores. They are both currently detained at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) following law enforcement actions ordered by President Donald Trump on January 3, which resulted in their arrests.
In a Facebook post, Telesur urged participants worldwide to engage in the day’s prayer service supporting Maduro, stating, “Your faith is the bond that unites this collective cry.”
“This represents a message of spiritual resilience and hope,” Telesur emphasized.
Maduro has faced U.S. charges related to drug trafficking for several years. He and Flores are expected to appear in court on March 26 for a hearing regarding their ongoing drug trafficking case.
“Global prayers echoing from every corner of the world call for the release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores,” Telesur claimed in a social media message, adding, “This act of solidarity transcends borders and amplifies the Bolivarian people’s demands for justice and peace.”
Telesur shared videos of one particular “Ecumenical Day of Prayer” event in Caracas, led by Nicolás Maduro Guerra, Maduro’s son and a member of parliament, who called for unity and faith for Venezuela’s future.
Reports also mentioned that the event featured a drone display showcasing signatures from Maduro, Flores, and the former leader.
Similar prayer gatherings were reportedly held by individuals in various locations around the world, including Namibia, Nigeria, and China, according to Telesur.
Telesur stated, “There’s a growing international outcry against the kidnapping of the president and his wife, which undermines the will of the people and disrupts the nation’s stability.”
Telesur, along with Venezuela’s national radio station La Radio del Sur, conveyed that the event aimed to offer “a prayer of unity that resonates on the international stage as a testament to the desire for peace shared by supporters of the Bolivarian Project globally.”
