Italy Shifts Strategy for World Baseball Classic Semifinals
Italy is going in a different direction from what was originally planned for the World Baseball Classic semifinals.
Reports indicate that Aaron Nola, a pitcher from the Phillies, is set to start on Monday night instead of Michael Lorenzen.
This adjustment opens up the possibility for Lorenzen to play against the United States in Tuesday’s championship game if Italy manages to beat Venezuela. There are suggestions that Italy’s coach, Francisco Cervelli, might even consider using both Nola and Lorenzen during the semifinals, potentially positioning them in the bullpen for the final, according to sources.
Italy is in a remarkable position this year, boasting the best record in its WBC history. They remain the only undefeated team at 5-0 after the quarterfinal win against Puerto Rico and a surprising victory over the United States during pool play.
The team took the lead in Pool B, successfully defeating Brazil with an 8-0 score and Great Britain by 7-4, followed by their notable win against both the U.S. and Mexico.
During the match against the United States, Italy surged to an 8-0 lead and held off a late rally, ultimately winning 8-6. Lorenzen, who pitched four scoreless innings in that game, might be preserved for the championship due to his performance.
On offense, Italy showcases a rich lineup and unique celebrations. Royals first baseman Vinny Pasquantino hit three home runs against Mexico, contributing to Italy’s advancement into the quarterfinals alongside Team USA. Players like Dante Noli, Jack Carianone, and Andrew Fisher have also made a significant impact.
After each home run, Italian players celebrate by taking a shot from an espresso machine—an exciting tradition they’ve maintained 12 times during this tournament.
If Italy secures a victory on Monday, they will face the United States again, who are looking to bounce back after unexpected defeats against Canada and the Dominican Republic. In their game against the Dominicans, strong defense and timely fourth-inning home runs helped the Americans regain their momentum.
Team USA has announced that Mets right-hander Nolan McLean will start for the final game. This would be his second appearance, having previously given up three runs in three innings during the earlier rounds.
Now, it’s Nola’s turn on Monday. He pitched five scoreless innings against Mexico and brings 11 years of MLB experience to the mound.
He will be aiming for another stellar performance to keep Italy’s dreams alive.
