Darius Slay Retires from NFL After 13 Successful Seasons
On Monday, Darius Slay, a six-time Pro Bowl cornerback, shared his decision to retire from the NFL after 13 seasons. He posted the news on Instagram, reflecting on his career and expressing gratitude for the sport.
In his message, he wrote, “Dear football player, I want to thank you for everything you have done for me. I was blessed to be able to play the game I loved since I was five years old at the highest level for an amazing 13 years. Football was my peace, my joy, my everything. This game allowed me to help take care of my family and loved ones, so I am forever grateful.”
Slay, who was a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions after playing at Mississippi State University, made quite a name for himself. He led the league in 2017 with eight interceptions and has an impressive total of 28 interceptions along with 163 passes defensed throughout his career.
After spending seven seasons with the Lions, he moved to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020, where he not only made a Pro Bowl appearance but also secured a Super Bowl ring after the Eagles triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX last season.
His final season was with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played 10 games and recorded three interceptions. Unfortunately, after being released by the Steelers, Slay was picked up by the Buffalo Bills but decided against playing for them, mentioning that he “didn’t feel like packing up and moving again.”
Slay, known for his knack for big plays at one of the toughest positions in football, concluded with a heartfelt note on his retirement: “It’s hard to say goodbye, but God has prepared a new chapter for me. I’m ready to turn the page and start appreciating the love and support you all have given me. I couldn’t have done this without you all. Just a kid from Brunswick, Georgia with big dreams…”
This chapter may have come to an end, but his legacy as a Super Bowl champion and a standout player will undoubtedly remain.
