Trump mocks Gavin Newsom's dyslexia, labeling him as 'low IQ'

Trump’s Comments on Newsom’s Dyslexia Spark Controversy

Donald Trump has taken shots at Gavin Newsom, ridiculing the California governor’s dyslexia and labeling him as unfit for presidency due to what he described as a “learning disability” and “low IQ.”

“Honestly, I’m all for people with learning disabilities, but I think we should probably have a president without one, don’t you?” Trump remarked to reporters during an Oval Office briefing on Monday.

He elaborated, mentioning, “It’s pretty controversial to say this, but Gavin Newsom, the president of the United States, openly admits he has dyslexia, and frankly, he’s just not bright.” He even utilized a derogatory nickname for the governor.

Newsom responded with a touch of humor, pointing out Trump’s error in referring to him as “President of the United States.” “No, we believe in fair elections!” he quipped on his platform.

The governor has been open about his dyslexia, discussing it in his memoir, “Youth in a Hurry.” In it, he reveals how the neurodevelopmental disorder, impacting reading and writing, often led him to feel insecure in his youth, sharing that his mother would remind him, “It’s okay to be average.”

Interestingly, Newsom also described how dyslexia has given him what he calls “secret powers,” allowing him to memorize information effortlessly. He said, “I could read a room with the best of them. I assessed faces, atmosphere, and mannerisms upon entering. Even under pressure, I could generate new topics and witty remarks.” This duality of struggle and strength is fascinating.

Trump’s remarks weren’t just a one-off; he has previously accused Newsom of having “mental issues” during a Kentucky event, claiming, “He can’t read a speech, he can’t do anything.” Those words, I think, reflect a pattern of Trump attempting to undermine his opponents.

In reaction to Trump’s comments, Newsom’s office kept a light tone, stating, “Our grandfather is talking about himself again. We wish him well. It’s not too late to seek psychological treatment.”

Trump also touched on Newsom’s SAT scores, repeating criticisms he’s faced regarding potential “racism” connected to these comments made about a 960 score during a recent interview with Andre Dickens, the black mayor of Atlanta. Trump summed up by saying, “Let me just say this: I think this was the worst interview I’ve ever seen anyone do.”
