Offensive NJ vanity plate that seems to insult Trump removed over a year after its approval

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has taken action against a concerning license plate that seems to target President Trump. The plate features a sequence of numbers that appear to suggest violence toward him.

This state agency, which oversees the approval of vanity plates, typically disallows political insults or coded messages. They are retracting the controversial plate reading “FDT8647” after it somehow evaded detection for over a year, prompting backlash online, as stated by an MVC representative.

The number 86 is used in restaurant lingo to mean “remove,” but it’s recently gained a darker connotation, connecting it to accusations of threats against Trump’s life, the 47th president.

Notably, former FBI Director James Comey faced legal troubles for sharing a photo of a seashell with “86 47” inscribed on it on Instagram in May 2025, which the Justice Department deemed a death threat.

New Jersey officials confirmed that the problematic plates had been approved in April 2025, according to reports.

Images on social media show these disturbing plates attached to a gray Subaru Outback in Mercer County, leading to outrage over how they were allowed by state authorities.

One user fumed, questioning how the MVC could approve a plate that blatantly says “F Donald Trump and 8647 him.”

Another commentator expressed frustration, stating, “This isn’t a joke. It’s calling for the death of a sitting president. What is wrong with society?”

Responses varied, with some suggesting that those who approved the plate must have found it amusing.

Officials from the MVC noted in a 2023 interview that while there are strict guidelines against vanity plates depicting sexual, violent, racial, or political content, it’s impossible to catch every instance.

Previous applications rejected by the DMV between 2015 and 2022 included others like “FJBIDEN,” “FB1DN,” “FKTRUMP,” and “FPUTN.”

Drivers who possess offensive vanity plates are required to return them within 15 days or face potential revocation of their vehicle’s registration.
