Democratic Candidates Hesitant to Support Hakeem Jeffries

As midterm elections draw near, several Democratic candidates are reportedly cautious about backing House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).

According to Axios, both Jeffries and his allies, who were previously significant players in the Democratic Party, don’t seem overly worried about this hesitation.

The situation might signal the beginning of a shift, as some new candidates have indicated that if Democrats regain control of the House, their support for Jeffries as speaker isn’t guaranteed. Axios noted that over 80 Democratic House candidates have either remained noncommittal or are openly opposed to him.

Months later, Jeffries’ predicament seems to have worsened, as reported by Axios.

“Most Democrats agree that he was not up for the moment,” commented Adam Hamawi, a contender for New Jersey’s 12th District. “We’re looking for someone to stand up to the administration.”

Depending on the number of seats Democrats secure in the House, the outcomes in the primaries could determine if Jeffries easily ascends to the Speaker position or encounters challenges similar to Kevin McCarthy’s 15-vote saga in 2023.

Additionally, Breitbart News mentioned that Jeffries recently attended a Democratic Party fundraiser in Hollywood, alongside comedian Jimmy Kimmel and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which raised over $2 million as the party aims to reclaim the House in the upcoming midterms.

Back in February, talk show host Stephen Colbert criticized Jeffries for advising members not to create a space during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, according to Breitbart News.

Colbert described it as a “silent rebellion,” adding, “I believe this is a bold rebranding of the jack squat. As Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, ‘Shhh.’

During the speech, Democratic lawmakers confronted Trump, as party leaders aimed to sidestep an “embarrassing” situation in the president’s 2025 remarks.

Moreover, Breitbart News reported in October that the Democratic Party is grappling with internal divisions regarding ideology, strategy, and leadership.
