Convicted Fraudster Seeks Clemency, Angers GOP Lawmakers
A former fraudster and prominent Democratic donor is currently seeking clemency while expressing support for President Donald Trump from prison, but Republican lawmakers are quite frustrated with the situation.
Sam Bankman-Fried, the co-founder and CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, received a 25-year prison sentence in 2024 after being convicted of multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy.
In recent posts, Bankman-Fried has praised President Trump’s policies, specifically those related to cryptocurrency and gas prices. He stated, “The current surge only highlights how far oil prices have fallen below.” His account on X mentioned these sentiments on Saturday.
His posts claim to reflect his words, shared through an approved method from the Bureau of Prisons, and are published by his agents.
“This guy is a piece of work,” remarked Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio, who has an interest in cryptocurrency. “He shouldn’t be forgiven. He deserves to remain in prison for a long time,” he told Politico.
Others share similar views. Senator Cynthia Lummis from Wyoming, often referred to as the “crypto queen,” also expressed skepticism, voicing hope that Trump wouldn’t be swayed by Bankman-Fried’s appeal, noting the significant harm he caused.
“That’s definitely something we’ll need to consider further,” Lummis remarked.
Republican Representative Mike Flood from Nebraska lamented the chaos caused by Bankman-Fried’s fraud, saying it “crashed my car,” emphasizing the negative impact on Wall Street. “He doesn’t belong back in the industry. His actions helped illustrate the problems we face,” he added.
An interview conducted by the New York Times in January showed that Trump has no intention of pardoning Bankman-Fried, admitting, “I don’t know him at all.”
FTX filed for bankruptcy in 2022 amid allegations of misusing billions in customer funds. The Department of Justice has mandated that Bankman-Fried pay $11 billion in forfeitures.
Additionally, Bankman-Fried contributed approximately $39 million in the 2022 midterm elections, with much of that funding supporting Democratic causes, according to a review of Federal Election Commission data.
As of now, Bankman-Fried’s attorney has not responded to requests for comments regarding this situation.
