Florida High School Senior Injured in Skiing Accident
A high school senior from Florida faced a devastating turn of events just before graduation. Zoe McEvoy had been eagerly anticipating college when she suffered severe injuries in a skiing accident while on spring break in Vail, Colorado.
On Monday, during her trip, which she took as a guest of a friend, McEvoy was involved in a serious incident on the slopes. Reports indicated that her injuries were extensive. She sustained shattered ribs, internal bleeding, and a ruptured spleen, alongside significant head and facial injuries. These included fractures in her forehead and eye socket, which required surgical repair.
“Instead of enjoying prom, graduation, and preparing for college, Zoe now faces a long and difficult recovery,” her family noted in updates.
Currently, she is being treated at Denver Health Hospital. Her mother, Anne McEvoy, shared on social media that while there is a long road ahead, all surgeries have been completed without major complications, and Zoe is healing.
Initially, the ski patrol and local hospital staff thought her injuries were not severe, but as her condition worsened, she was airlifted to a hospital where surgeons operated on her life-threatening spleen injury immediately. Doctors discovered she had eight broken ribs, a bruised lung, and a brain bleed along with a concussion.
In the aftermath, doctors inserted a titanium plate to stabilize her ribs and discovered additional fractures in her skull that required further surgery. Thankfully, all surgeries were reportedly successful.
Reflecting on her recovery, Zoe expressed uncertainty about what the next months would bring regarding her academic life and future plans. She had recently been nominated for her work in a summer healthcare course by the University of St. Andrews and had been participating in various activities, including being on the varsity girls basketball team.
This unfortunate accident has shifted the focus from her promising future to a challenging path of healing. The McEvoy family is navigating these trying times as they support her recovery.
