Donna Miller triumphs over Jesse Jackson Jr. in the Illinois Democratic primary

Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller Wins Democratic Primary

In a recent Democratic primary held on Tuesday, Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller emerged victorious against former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and state Sen. Robert Peters, securing her position to represent one of Illinois’ reliably blue congressional seats.

Miller has made healthcare, particularly issues around affordability and childbirth, a core part of her campaign, prominently featured on her online platforms. She has stated, “I will champion reproductive rights and cost savings in Congress,” drawing from her experience as a former board member of Planned Parenthood.

With a campaign fund of $1.9 million, Miller’s contributions far surpassed those of her opponents, Peters and Jackson, whose financial backing appears modest in comparison.

Miller is now vying for the U.S. Senate seat previously held by seven-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly. Throughout her tenure as a commissioner, which began in 2018, she has been involved in overseeing Cook County’s finances and operations, in addition to ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

Before her work with Cook County, Miller held several leadership roles, including as director of Planned Parenthood of Illinois and president of the South Suburban Democratic Women.

The Illinois 2nd Congressional District stretches from the northernmost part of downtown Chicago and extends south along the Indiana border, maintaining its status as a Democratic stronghold for 70 years. Incumbent Kelly secured her last re-election in 2024 by a significant margin against her Republican challenger.

Following her nomination, Miller is set to face Republican candidate Mike Noack, a truck driver, in the upcoming November election.
