AJ Green Advocates for Improved Mental Health Care in NFL

AJ Green is urging the NFL to enhance its mental health support for players. His call to action came through an emotional essay on the Players Tribune, published on Wednesday, following the tragic loss of his friend Rondale Moore, who took his own life last month at just 25 years old.

In his piece, Green emphasized the need for better mental health care for players dealing with injuries. He believes the league should require independent mental health counseling for players recovering from major injuries.

“To me, I think there’s still room for improvement in the NFL when it comes to how the league supports the mental health of its players,” Green noted. He specified that after a significant injury, a player should meet with a mental health professional, and if they suffer a second major injury, this support should continue beyond rehabilitation.

Moore faced multiple injuries and mental health challenges over the past two years. He was discovered in a garage in New Albany, Indiana, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

His journey included a dislocated knee during training camp after transitioning from the Cardinals to the Falcons in 2024, followed by a bruised knee during the preseason with the Vikings in 2025.

Green criticized the league’s current perception of mental health care, suggesting that it is often regarded negatively by decision-makers. “It doesn’t mean anything if the people making football decisions view mental health issues privately as red flags,” he stated. He pointed out that while these feelings may not be openly expressed, they create an environment where players might hide their struggles.

Green’s connection to Moore makes this issue deeply personal. During their time together in Arizona, they formed a bond reminiscent of a father-son relationship. Green would often give Moore advice, jokingly referring to him as “Rondale Green” and emphasizing his role in guiding the young player.

Moore’s funeral took place on March 6 in New Albany, and Green assisted him in selecting a tie for the service.
