USC Basketball Welcomes Christian Collins

Eric Musselman, the basketball coach at the University of Southern California, is gaining significant momentum with his incoming freshman class.

The latest addition, power forward Christian Collins, is not only recognized as a McDonald’s All-American but also carries a unique health condition that sets him apart in the college basketball scene.

Collins, who is just 11 years old and a standout at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, shared his commitment to USC on Wednesday. Despite being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis—a condition that can lead to lung issues and breathing difficulties—he has reported mild symptoms and manages them through medication and an inhaler.

Collins’s mother, Angel Fennell, spoke about the misunderstandings surrounding his illness, recalling instances where classmates expressed alarming concerns about his health. “She actually asked me, ‘Are you going to die?’” Collins stated, highlighting the need for greater awareness.

Although cystic fibrosis currently has no cure, advancements in treatment seem promising, according to recent medical insights. Collins chose USC over offers from schools like Kentucky and Louisville, which shows confidence in the program.

Alongside Collins, the freshman class is bolstered by identical twin seven-footers, Darius and Adonis Ratliff, positioning USC’s three-man class at No. 6 nationally according to 247Sports.com.

His path could serve as an inspiration, as any attention he receives may help raise awareness of cystic fibrosis and combat the stigma associated with it. Should he thrive, there’s no doubt he’ll quickly become a fan favorite and a symbol of resilience.
