The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee narrowly approved the nomination of Senator Markwayne Mullin for Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security on March 19, with a vote of 8-7.
During the committee vote, the chair, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), broke ranks with his party to oppose the nomination, while Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) provided bipartisan support, casting the crucial vote to move forward. Senate Republican leaders are planning a full Senate vote soon.
At the confirmation hearing, Paul criticized Mullin, referencing a 2017 assault incident where he suffered significant injuries. Paul expressed disbelief that Mullin would “justify and glorify” such violence, questioning if someone with that mindset was truly suitable to lead the Department of Homeland Security.
Mullin acknowledged his previous statements but disputed their interpretation, stating that he doesn’t think anyone should be surprised by his views. He emphasized his commitment to protecting all individuals and remarked that his responsibilities transcended partisan politics.
After the hearing, Paul reiterated his concerns, arguing that Mullin is “unfit” for the role, pointing to his past comments about the assault and broader issues concerning his behavior. Paul characterized Mullin’s comments as bizarre and indicative of someone who might “justify violence.”
During the hearing, Fetterman backed Mullin, asserting that “Americans don’t like chaos” and highlighted the unsustainable situation at the border, citing the high number of encounters with migrants. He advocated for strict enforcement measures and implied that without such efforts, achieving the American Dream would be challenging, reflecting on the former president’s border policies.
Fetterman later expressed his support for Mullin on social media, mentioning that he believes DHS requires strong leadership and the need to revitalize the department.
His endorsement was complemented by Paul A. Perez, president of the National Border Security Council, who stated confidence in Mullin’s qualifications for leading DHS. Additionally, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien expressed strong confidence in Mullin’s dedication to protecting America.
