Pence describes Democrats obstructing DHS funding during Iran attacks as unacceptable

Former Vice President Mike Pence recently expressed his inability to justify Congressional Democrats’ decision to withhold funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) during a time when the U.S. military is engaged in conflict with Iran and facing domestic terrorist incidents.

Pence highlighted, “It’s unconscionable that Democrats in Washington continue to deny funding to DHS while our military is at war with a major state sponsor of terrorism,” in a recent interview. This statement comes as both parties in Congress seem entrenched in a political standoff over President Trump’s strict policies on illegal immigration, which have contributed to a DHS shutdown lasting over a month.

In response to the shutdown, which has been exacerbated by ongoing tensions, House Republicans are planning to hold hearings regarding its implications. Essential workers, notably TSA agents, have been forced to work without pay, resulting in delays at airports and staff resignations.

Democrats are advocating for a significant overhaul of how Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operates and are pressuring the Trump administration for funding other vital DHS divisions like the Transportation Security Administration, the Coast Guard, and FEMA. However, Republicans argue that it is the Democrats who are standing in the way of funding and thus causing further strain.

The backdrop of these political maneuvers includes recent tragic events, such as the attacks on a synagogue in Michigan and the shooting of an ROTC instructor at Old Dominion University in Virginia, which have heightened security concerns.

Pence, reflecting on his experience as both vice president and a member of Congress, recalled the threats the U.S. faces both domestically and internationally, emphasizing the need for robust security measures. He remarked, “It’s crucial that our law enforcement and security agencies have the tools they need to protect Americans.” He underscored that with America’s military currently active against threats from Iran, ensuring that resources are available for homeland security is more vital than ever.
