An Exploration of the Transformation of America’s Oldest Catholic University Through LGBTQ+ Perspectives

Georgetown University LGBTQ Event Sparks Controversy

An upcoming LGBTQ-themed event at Georgetown University is causing some stir, prompting a critical response from a student leader. The university’s Catholic Ministry Instagram account shared a post on Wednesday, inviting students to a “student-led, queer-affirming discussion of the intersection of our faiths and our queer identities” at the end of the month. Shae McInnis, president of the Georgetown University College Republicans, expressed his disapproval, stating that this decision contradicts Catholic Church teachings.

“It’s really disheartening to see Georgetown’s Catholic Ministry put on events that may confuse people regarding the Church’s official teachings, potentially leading many away from Christ and salvation,” he commented.

The Catholic Ministry’s post was a collaboration with various religious groups on campus, including Georgetown University Queer Dharma and LJewBTQ+. The invitation to the “Queer Interfaith Discussion Group” even mentioned that snacks would be provided, alongside other activities on their Instagram page that included an evening prayer for immigrants and their “7th Annual Mass of Belonging.”

One portion of the invitation stated, “LGBTQIA+ Catholics: You belong here! Whether you attend Mass every Sunday or feel uncertain about your place in the Church, you are loved and you belong.” This Mass is described as a celebration of the diverse community within the Catholic circle.

This year’s Lent theme for the Catholic Ministry focuses on “standing in solidarity with immigrants, migrants, and refugees,” claiming alignment with Pope Leo XIV’s message to act responsibly towards neighbors. The invitation pointed out the traumas faced by immigrants, highlighting violence and dehumanizing rhetoric stemming from government policy.

In October, Georgetown University welcomed Fr. Lucas Sharma to their Jesuit community to serve as a pastoral associate in the LGBTQ Resource Center. His role is described as unique, focusing on studies related to religion, gender, and sexuality. “I hope my work will help make Georgetown a more inclusive space for students across various identities,” he explained.

Sharma emphasized that the LGBTQ Resource Center aims to promote community and joy among students, empowering their voices. However, some students contend that these initiatives distort the Church’s teachings of loving one’s neighbor by validating actions the Church views as sinful.

One concerned student’s correspondence with a Georgetown priest reflected this sentiment: “Discussing issues around homosexuality and real struggles is one thing, but endorsing actions considered sinful by the Church feels wrong. It also disappoints me that the pro-life movement hasn’t received this level of public backing.”

As of now, Georgetown University and its Catholic Ministry have not responded to requests for comment on the situation.
