FBI Investigation into Joe Kent Before Resignation Raises Questions
Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, was reportedly unaware that Joe Kent, the former National Counterterrorism Center Director, was under FBI investigation for leaking classified information prior to her resignation, as disclosed by a senior intelligence official.
Kent resigned on Tuesday after publicly opposing President Donald Trump’s stance on the Iran conflict, stating in his resignation letter that Iran did not represent an “imminent threat” to the U.S.
Sources familiar with the situation revealed that the FBI’s investigation into Kent had been active for several weeks before his departure. Such investigations are often conducted discreetly to prevent leaks. The fact that Gabbard wasn’t informed poses serious questions about the communication and decision-making processes regarding Kent’s access to sensitive information.
This brings to light concerns about how decisions were made concerning Kent’s security clearance, especially since he was excluded from key planning meetings and daily presidential briefings linked to Operation Epic Fury related to Iran. A senior administration official labeled Kent a “known leaker” and indicated that Gabbard hadn’t acted on suggestions to terminate his position.
Although White House officials expressed concerns regarding Kent to Gabbard, they stopped short of demanding that she fire him. Officials from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) mentioned that Gabbard would have complied if the President had instructed her to dismiss Kent.
In her recent congressional appearances, Gabbard faced scrutiny over Kent’s situation. When Representative Elise Stefanik read a section of Kent’s resignation statement, Gabbard acknowledged that the President’s remarks were significant and insisted he makes decisions based on available information.
Upon being asked if she was troubled by Kent’s comments, Gabbard conceded, “Yes.”
Efforts to obtain comments from Gabbard, Kent, and the FBI have been initiated.
