Families of ICE agents turn against them due to deportations

The ongoing political stalemate around border security has taken a deeply personal turn, with families of federal immigration officials voicing extreme disapproval. Reports suggest that some officials are being disowned by their relatives. One family member, Jake, expressed his feelings in an email to his brother, an ICE agent for almost ten years, stating, “Some of the atrocities committed every day will be punished in hell.” Vanity Fair, which covered this story, provided pseudonyms for the individuals interviewed.

Not long ago, Jake left a voicemail for his brother, expressing anger over his support for President Trump and even went as far as deleting his contact information. The emotional toll of these strained relationships seems to weigh heavily on him. He mentioned, “Sometimes I feel like I need to stand up and put this aside and keep these relationships going. But maybe you just saw something on the news that kind of turns you on again. You think you can’t separate this.”

This sentiment is shared by many as hostility against federal agents has risen, particularly after the Trump administration sent more agents to cities like Minneapolis to crack down on illegal immigration. This operation, known as Operation Metro Surge, has not only increased tensions but has also resulted in two American deaths, sparking widespread protests. Though investigations are ongoing, authorities maintain that officers acted within legal boundaries.

Family dynamics have shifted in troubling ways, as evidenced by Carla from Maryland, who reported that her family decided to exclude her from Thanksgiving celebrations after an uncle became an ICE agent. She remarked, “We are very opinionated… and I think it’s been very well known since 2020 that we feel like we’re heading into decline.”

Another family member, Kim, noted a drastic change in her uncle, once friendly and outgoing, now transformed by his role as an ICE officer. She questioned how he could live with the impact of his job on others: “How can he make a living doing such horrible things to other people?”

Despite claims by ICE agents that they have the legal documents and evidence to justify their actions, an emotional disconnect persists. In January, reports indicated a staggering 8,000% increase in death threats against ICE agents and a 1,300% rise in assaults, underscoring the heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement today.
