Identity Crisis in the Conservative Movement
The conservative movement is experiencing a significant identity crisis, especially as the longstanding tensions between grassroots supporters and establishment figures come to a head in this digital age.
Aaron McIntyre, a host on Blaze TV, suggests that this confusion stems from years of mistrust, which initially built up between mainstream media and their audiences, and now extends to the relationship between conservative institutions and their followers.
“To say that the conservative movement has gone off the rails would be to comically underestimate the damage,” McIntyre notes.
While some commentators blame podcasts for the current disorder, McIntyre argues that this perspective overlooks deeper issues. He points out that conservatives are mimicking the traditional media’s patronizing attitudes toward listeners.
He remarks, “Establishment conservatives have treated audiences like traditional news organizations: as resources to be controlled, manipulated, and sometimes exploited. A movement that has been lied to for decades will not be undone by scolding those who finally stopped listening.”
Continuing, he argues that Democrats have raised issues about disinformation while simultaneously launching initiatives that aim to recreate what they previously condemned. He believes that while the right has celebrated chaos, establishment conservatives are struggling to grasp the implications of these changes.
McIntyre argues that Donald Trump represented not only a challenge to progressive media but also a rebellion against conservative establishment media. “That plan worked, and it continued to work in ways that many never expected,” he adds.
Currently, he explains that “conservative gatekeepers” are exhibiting a sense of urgency similar to that of the left, accusing others of “dangerous rhetoric,” calling for deplatforming, and demanding “responsible voices to take back control.”
He cautions conservatives about the futility of lecturing their podcast audiences on responsible broadcasting after years of manipulation. “The level of mistrust runs too deep,” McIntyre states. “Censorship will fail, too. Shaming and platform crackdowns did not rebuild confidence in Democrats, and they will not rebuild confidence in Republicans.”
