Upcoming Finale of “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette” Promises Emotion
Ahead of the season’s concluding episode, Constance Zimmer has hinted at a highly emotional finale for the series. In a discussion with DECIDER, she remarked, “I think we all know what’s destined to happen. It’s really about how we choose to present it.” Zimmer portrays Ann Freeman, Carolyn’s mother, and although she couldn’t divulge many specifics, she did mention that viewers might find the events quite hard to watch.
Zimmer expressed that her greatest challenge was keeping her own knowledge of the tragic events from swaying her performance. John and Carolyn lost their lives in July 1999 when the plane John was piloting went down near Martha’s Vineyard, with Carolyn’s sister, Lauren, also aboard, heading to a family wedding.
The series opens with the three of them boarding the aircraft on that fateful evening, but cuts away before anything unfolds further. Fans are left to grapple with either reimagining the crash or contemplating its aftermath, which adds a layer of complexity to the viewing experience.
Remaining tight-lipped about the details, Zimmer noted that she aimed to focus solely on Ann’s perspective without jumping ahead in the narrative. “As an actor, you’re taught not to play to the ending. While we know how things unfold, our job is to remain in the moment. It can be tough because, honestly, the emotion of knowing what’s to come is overwhelming. Once you hold that knowledge, you have to set it aside,” she explained.
She continued, emphasizing that episode nine would be challenging for viewers, suggesting it encapsulates the feelings the audience experienced at the time of the real events. It portrays the beautiful and complicated relationship of one of the most prominent couples, leading to an emotional crescendo for a show that has felt like a whirlwind from the start. If Zimmer has her way, viewers should keep tissues handy.
The first eight episodes of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette are currently available for streaming. The season finale is set to air on Thursday, March 26th, on FX and Hulu.
