Controversial Social Media History of Rama Dowaj
The social media presence of Rama Dowaj, the wife of New York’s Mayor Zoran Mamdani, has sparked serious concerns due to her past posts that glorify Islamic terrorism and show hostility towards Jewish communities.
According to reports, Dowaj, who is Syrian American, acknowledged her past fascination with terrorist acts during her teenage years and early adulthood. She stated, “During my teens and early 20s, I glorified terrorist violence in a wide range of social media posts.” This included her support for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and its activities during the First Intifada.
In September 2017, when she was about to turn 20, Dowaj shared a post on the Tumblr account of the infamous Palestinian terrorist Leila Khaled. Using the username ‘Dimashq,’ she echoed one of Khaled’s notable quotes: “I’m willing to accept death if it helps my cause.”
Further reports revealed Dowaj’s admiration for figures involved in violent extremism, particularly those associated with the PFLP. She expressed support for Shadia Abu Ghazaleh, who infamously bombed a bus in Israel. On International Women’s Day, she referred to Ghazaleh as “the first Palestinian woman to take part in the resistance movement after the occupation in 1967.” It was noted that Ghazaleh died while trying to create an explosive device in Tel Aviv.
In a 2015 post, Dowaj criticized Snapchat for its portrayal of Tel Aviv, stating, “It shouldn’t exist in the first place. They’re the occupiers.” Additionally, when she was only 15, she made an inappropriate post that included a racial slur.
Though Dowaj’s previous social media activity appears to have been deactivated, she seemed to respond to the resurfaced posts by removing her old account under the username @_RamaDee.
Recent reports indicate that Dowaj also exhibited support for several posts celebrating the violence against Israeli civilians that occurred on October 7, 2023. Mayor Mamdani has defended his wife, emphasizing that regardless of her views, he is responsible for addressing the concerns of all citizens in his role.
It’s important to note the ongoing public debate regarding actions and statements made by other public figures, including members of the judiciary, reflecting a broader trend of scrutiny in the political climate.
