Surfer Injured in Shark Attack in California

This week, a surfer sustained serious injuries due to a shark attack off the California coast.

The 39-year-old man was surfing near Big River Beach in Mendocino Headlands State Park on the evening of March 18, when the incident occurred, injuring both of his legs, as reported by local lifeguards.

The attack happened around 5:18 PM local time. Fortunately, three off-duty lifeguards were in the area and managed to pull him to safety, providing emergency medical assistance shortly afterward.

He was subsequently transported to a hospital in Fort Bragg for further care.

To ensure public safety, authorities decided to close the beach for 48 hours after the attack, as well as to post warning signs for beachgoers.

Various agencies responded to the scene, including the Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, along with local emergency teams.

Lifeguards remarked on the effectiveness of their prompt response, emphasizing the necessity of having trained lifeguards ready along Northern California’s coastline. They noted that, while rare, shark bites are among the emergencies that lifeguards are trained to handle.

In light of the incident, officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife have launched an investigation that is currently underway.
