Warren Endorses Platner Amid Tattoo Controversy
Senator Elizabeth Warren, representing Massachusetts, endorsed Graham Platner’s Senate campaign despite his association with Nazi-related tattoos. This endorsement, made during a social media video, was juxtaposed against Warren’s previous criticisms of Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth’s Christian tattoos.
Warren praised Platner, describing him as “the real deal” who embodies a spirit of defiance against conventional wisdom. She expressed confidence that the people of Maine were ready for change.
Platner, an oyster farmer, had a chest tattoo of a skull and crossbones, which is akin to symbols linked to the Nazis. Though he later removed it, he claimed ignorance about its historical significance.
Warren’s refusal to directly address Platner’s controversies stood out, especially compared to her previous critiques of Hegseth. In early 2025, she implied Hegseth’s Christian symbols might indicate disloyalty, as tensions arose during his confirmation hearing amid concerns expressed by his peers about potential insider threats.
While engaging with Platner’s issues, Warren simply stated that he has apologized and maintained dialogue with his constituents in Maine, appearing quite lenient in comparison to her earlier stance. This is particularly notable, given her sharp criticism of Hegseth, who, despite multiple deployments and commendations, was scrutinized for his body ink.
The contrast is striking; Warren’s previous letters to Hegseth highlighted her apprehension about someone in his position with such a background. Now, with Platner facing new challenges from his opponent, Governor Janet Mills, the dynamics are shifting.
Mills’ campaign recently unleashed a fierce advertisement focusing on Platner’s tattoo and controversial statements he made online a decade ago. This ad reportedly cost a significant amount and culminates with a striking image of Platner that suggests a deeper examination of his past is warranted.
In light of the controversies, Platner did express regret over past remarks that resurfaced about sensitive topics, emphasizing he did not recognize that person anymore. As he continues to generate enthusiasm at campaign events, polls indicate that he currently leads Mills, further complicating the race for the Democratic nomination to challenge long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins.
