Joe Greene is Alive and Well
Don’t be alarmed—Joe Greene, the legendary Steelers player, is not dead, despite rumors suggesting otherwise. Reports on TMZ indicate that Greene is alive at the age of 79. “That’s not accurate,” they stated.
Longtime NFL reporter John McClain confirmed Greene is doing fine.
“Fortunately, Joe Greene is not dead. That’s what I heard from his family,” McClain shared on Twitter. “That report was fake news. Joe is fine!”
A rumor circulated recently, which seems to be part of a troubling trend of false health reports about public figures. Speculation began when a user on X, known as Johnny Cadillac, tweeted about Greene’s supposed death, causing quite a stir among followers.
Last year, Yes Network dismissed misleading claims about Yankees legend Paul O’Neal’s health that had spread across social media, demonstrating the persistent issue of misinformation in the news.
Greene, a former defensive tackle for the Steelers, is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive players ever. Throughout his impressive 13-year career from 1969 to 1981, he won four Super Bowls and earned the Defensive Player of the Year accolade twice.
With ten Pro Bowl appearances and four All-Pro selections under his belt, Greene was a key figure in the famed “Steel Curtain” defense that dominated football during the late 1970s. He stands as the last living member of that storied defensive line.
It’s worth noting that during his career, Greene amassed 77.5 sacks, with a personal record of 11 sacks in the 1972 season alone. Despite the rigors of professional football, he showcased incredible durability, rarely missing games. He played in 91 consecutive games early on and maintained an impressive streak of at least 10 games per season.
Reflecting on his legacy, Greene once expressed, “I just want people to remember that I’m a good player and I’m not actually mean. I’d like to be remembered for playing 13 years and contributing to four championship teams.”
The last few years have seen the passing of several players from that era, such as LC Greenwood, Ernie Holmes, and Dwight White, but thankfully, Greene remains a respected figure among fans and former teammates.
