Ex-Clinton aide cautions that the Democratic Party has turned into a 'faculty lounge'

Democratic Strategist Critiques Party’s Direction

Paul Begala, a former aide to President Clinton and a Democratic strategist, voiced concerns about the direction of the Democratic Party, suggesting it’s leaning towards an elitist “faculty lounge” mentality. He expressed this opinion during an appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” where they talked about the party’s changing campaign strategies. Maher brought up comments made by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who argued that Democrats need to be perceived as more “culturally normal” to resonate with voters.

In a past interview, Newsom mentioned that Democrats should curb their focus on identity politics and pronouns, indicating a need for broader appeal. Begala remarked, “We used to be a factory floor party, and now we’re a faculty lounge party.” He criticized the intellectual elitism that he feels is becoming prevalent within the party, noting that it often comes off as sanctimonious and judgmental.

He highlighted language that some party members use, labeling inmates as “justice-involved” instead of prisoners, which he found troubling. Sharing a personal anecdote about growing up in a prison town, he commented, “We call them crooks. Prisoners, prisoners, prisoners.”

Begala also discussed potential Republican candidates in California’s gubernatorial race, such as Fox News contributor Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, both of whom are gaining traction according to recent polling.

A UC Berkeley poll indicated that around 17% of potential voters support Hilton, while 16% back Bianco. In contrast, Democratic candidates like Rep. Eric Swalwell and former Rep. Katie Porter led with 14% and 13% support, respectively. Begala emphasized that the Democratic Party should consolidate its efforts around a few strong candidates to maintain its dominance in California.

He lamented, “Democrats have to come together and focus on the one or two most powerful people, not the 20.” This approach, he believes, is essential for ensuring the party remains competitive in upcoming elections.

Additionally, he described Joe Biden’s presidency as a “tragedy,” pointing out that there are many strong candidates ready to lead, citing individuals like Newsom and others as examples of talent within the party.
