Senator Questions Army’s $200 Billion Request

During an appearance on Fox News Channel’s “Jesse Watters Prime Time,” Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) expressed his support for President Trump’s actions regarding Iran but raised concerns about the Army’s request for $200 billion to sustain ongoing military operations.

Guest host Charlie Hart commented on the necessity of upkeep in future military endeavors. He then probed Johnson about Trump’s intention to possibly send troops to Kharg Island, questioning the viability of negotiating with the Iranian leadership, whom he described as irrational. Hart noted that seizing Kharg Island might not necessarily guarantee the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Johnson acknowledged the unpredictability of whether a rational leader could emerge in Iran, or if the Iranian populace would influence a government shift. He pointed out the difficulties in negotiating with the current Iranian leadership, emphasizing their historical stance since the ongoing conflict with the U.S. for nearly 47 years. According to Johnson, the situation could have been different if Iran had simply agreed to abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions and allowed inspections. He asserted that Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism and highlighted the global acknowledgment of the threat they pose.

In response to Hart’s inquiry about how Congress might handle the Army’s funding request, Johnson affirmed the necessity of national defense as a government priority. He expressed a desire to understand the $200 billion request better but also suggested reevaluating the broader financial landscape, mentioning that with up to $7 trillion potentially needed, there are significant issues of fraud within defense spending that should be addressed, estimated to range from $700 billion to $1 trillion annually.
