First Lady Refutes Belarusian President's Incorrect Statement About Her Seeking His Help to Contact Putin

Melania Trump Denies Belarusian President’s Claims

First Lady Melania Trump has dismissed claims from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko regarding his alleged request for help in reuniting children separated during the Ukraine conflict. She describes these allegations as untrue and lacking evidence.

In a statement to a news outlet on Sunday, she emphasized that all discussions about family reunification have been directly between her, her authorized representatives, and high-ranking officials from both Russia and Ukraine. “Mr. Lukashenko’s assertions that I sought his help in efforts to reunite children in Ukraine and Russia are false and baseless,” she asserted. “Up to this point, all engagements related to this matter have been strictly conducted by my authorized team and myself.”

She further clarified, “There has been no communication or lobbying from any third party on my behalf.”

Lukashenko had remarked on Friday that the First Lady had provided him with a list of children reportedly missing in Russia due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, suggesting she asked him to relay this to President Vladimir Putin.

However, sources familiar with ongoing discussions noted that the First Lady and her representatives are working directly with Putin’s team and Ukrainian officials. No intermediaries are involved in these conversations.

An official made it clear that there had been no outreach to Lukashenko from the First Lady or her representatives for assistance in connecting with him.

Since October, the First Lady has successfully facilitated the reunification of Russian and Ukrainian children with their families on three occasions amidst the conflict, with the latest announcement occurring on February 12. Preparations are underway for a fourth round of reunifications, expected to commence in early April. All parties have been in discussions aimed at enhancing these efforts, which have reportedly been constructive and earnest.

Her contributions in this area represent a rare tangible advancement toward resolving the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
