Messi Stars in Dramatic Victory at Yankee Stadium
On Sunday at Yankee Stadium, the spotlight was undoubtedly on Lionel Messi, captivating a crowd of 45,845 fans. The match featured Inter Miami going up against New York City FC, and it ended with Miami clinching a 3-2 victory, thanks in no small part to Messi’s second-half goal, which thrilled those in pink jerseys.
Gabriel Santiago, a 20-year-old Fordham student, shared his excitement, saying, “It’s been a great experience so far. He’s been doing laser shows, so it was definitely worth it.” For many fans, Messi represents the pinnacle of soccer greatness. Diego Fernandez, 21, couldn’t help but praise the player: “He’s accomplished everything. I think he’s definitely the greatest player in this sport. Every time he has the ball, something magical seems likely to happen.”
Even players from NYCFC, like Agustín Ojeda, acknowledged the significance of sharing the field with Messi. Ojeda, an Argentine himself, reflected on the honor of playing alongside someone he has always admired.
The atmosphere was electric as fans roared every time Messi approached the ball. During warm-ups, eager shouts erupted from the crowd, especially in the right corner of the stadium. The excitement reached a fever pitch as Messi practiced shooting, and it was as if fans were reliving World Cup memories just by watching him.
Throughout the match, each time Messi touched the ball, the crowd cheered, reminiscent of cheers that accompany a home run in the final moments of a big game. As the game neared its end, chants of “Messi” resonated, particularly when Miami led 3-2.
Messi, having just recently scored his 900th goal for club and country, showcased why he’s considered one of football’s best. Early on, he forced a diving save from NYCFC’s keeper, Matt Freese, and nearly put one in the net from 25 yards out—only to hit the post. He displayed his skills further by maneuvering past defenders and firing shots that struck the crossbar.
Finally, the crowd got what they anticipated when Messi took a free kick in the 61st minute. Though it initially hit an NYC player, it managed to slip past Freese, tying the game at 2-2 and igniting Miami’s comeback.
NYCFC defender Kevin O’Toole noted how close Messi came to scoring multiple times, saying, “The woodwork saved him a few times in the first half. I think he’s a player who always creates his own chances.”
Unfortunately for NYCFC, they continued their unexpected losing streak against Miami, with their last win against them dating back to March 11, 2023. This loss was also significant as it marked NYCFC’s first defeat of the season after gathering 10 points in their first four games.
This match was a rematch for NYCFC against Miami, following their earlier loss in the Eastern Conference Finals. Right from the start, Gonzalo Lujan capitalized on a loose ball inside the box to score for Inter Miami. Nicolás Fernández Mercau equalized in the 17th minute, but NYCFC took the lead with Agustín Ojeda’s goal in the 59th. Ultimately, Michael dos Santos scored the decisive goal for Inter Miami in the 74th minute.
