Cuba Prepares for Potential Military Threat
Cuba is on high alert for a “possible military invasion,” a senior official indicated on Sunday. This warning comes amid concerns that President Donald Trump may assert control over the island through various aggressive foreign policy strategies.
Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, the vice minister of foreign affairs, spoke on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” stating, “Our military is always prepared and has actually been getting ready for a possible military invasion.” He remarked that failing to prepare would be naive given the current global climate, though he expressed hope that such an event wouldn’t occur and questioned its justification.
When pressed about specific preparations for potential conflict, Fernández de Cossio mentioned Cuba’s historical readiness to mobilize but did not elaborate further.
Last week, President Trump expressed to Fox News that he believed he might soon have the “honor” of “occupying Cuba in some way.”
In response to Trump’s comments, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel countered in a post on X, asserting that “any external invader would come into conflict with an impregnable resistance.”
Fernández de Cossio reiterated Cuba’s stance on sovereignty, emphasizing that the nation will not be subjugated to any foreign power. He also expressed a desire to avoid military conflict, stating, “We sincerely hope there will be no military action, but frankly, I see no reason to justify military action against Cuba. We want to have a friendly and respectful relationship with the United States.”
