Senate candidate Talarico receives criticism for anti-meat video: ‘Freak’

Texas Democratic Senate primary intensifies following Talarico's allegation regarding a comment on a 'mediocre Black man'

Senate Candidate Faces Criticism for Anti-Meat Comments

James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the Senate from Texas, is under scrutiny after an old video resurfaced. In the clip, he encourages Texans to reduce meat consumption as a way to combat climate change.

Republicans and conservative commentators have criticized his stance. Some suggest this might hurt his chances in the Senate race. “Democrats want to downplay Talarico’s impact, but this footage keeps coming back,” stated Andrew Corbett from Turning Point USA on X. He noted Talarico was previously seen wearing a mask while admonishing Texans about their meat consumption. “This is Texas—it’s going to be a lasting issue for him.”

According to Lawrence Jones, a commentator on “The Will Cain Show,” Talarico’s comments are not just ill-timed but could be damaging to his political ambitions.

Talarico, who is a three-term state representative and describes himself as a Presbyterian seminarian, is vying to challenge Senator John Cornyn, a Republican. Cornyn is currently dealing with a primary threat from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Earlier this month, Talarico won a primary election against Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas).

His remarks about meat stem from a speech made in April 2022, where he labeled his re-election campaign as a “no-meat” campaign. “We’re hearing increasing discussions about animal welfare,” he said, urging people to keep masks on. “Reducing meat consumption is crucial in our fight against climate change.” He emphasized that his campaign would solely support vegan products from local businesses.

In response to the backlash, Talarico’s campaign released an image of him enjoying a turkey leg while wearing a shirt depicting the Texas flag, attempting to counter accusations of being anti-meat.

Despite efforts to reclaim the narrative, Talarico faces ongoing criticism from Republicans. The National Republican Senatorial Committee quipped, “Who’s going to inform him that cows are a top commodity in Texas?” Cornyn also responded humorously, promoting voting Republican with the line, “There’s no better steak,” while Senator Ted Cruz labeled Talarico as a “weird man” proposing a “barbecue ban.”

In addition to his meat comments, Talarico’s past remarks about religion, especially in relation to transgender issues, have been a focal point for Republicans. In a 2021 legislative debate, he claimed “God is non-binary,” a claim he reiterated recently, describing it as both provocative and theologically valid. He further stated that discussions around biological males participating in women’s sports were part of a “far-right conspiracy theory.”

Though Democrats have struggled to secure Senate positions in Texas for decades, Talarico believes he has a good chance. A recent internal poll from his campaign suggests he is ahead of his opponents Cornyn and Paxton in hypothetical matchups.
